Starting on Your Character Analysis
You are to research one major character from Alfredo Véa's book La Maravilla.
What do you need?
- A specific character
- Two scholarly sources (or more to support your discussion and argument)
- MLA citation style
Researching these particular characters offers some challenges, but they can be worked around:
- Véa is a relatively unknown author, so there is little published scholarly study of him or his work.
- Much of what has been published is in Spanish, so if you do not read that language, your choices are limited.
So how do you deal with these challenges?
First, take a deep breath.
Second, look the characters not only as named individuals, but as representatives or symbols or stereotypes of groups of people.
Third, ask how your character moves the story forward. What actions do they take that tell the story, pose a question, resolve a conflict? What is their history? Do they act out of character in any way and does that affect the other characters and action?
What relationships do they participate in within this story?
Using the example of Boydeen, the recorder of events, in this story, you will find little focus on her. But, expand the search to the role of the abused in literature and you will find more. Or research on the role of the passive observer in a story as Boydeen appears at first glance. Is Boydeen actually passive in all sense of the word and if not, how do her actions affect the story and other characters?
