NAIC -- North American Industrial Code --Current classification
SIC -- Standard Industry Classification --Older code still used by some
The SIC or NAIC is a industry classification code assigned to all industries in the U.S. Its used for company, competitor and industry research. Many publications, databases and statistical sources use the number to group similar companies together. Each company is assigned one or more codes to group it by industry type. For example Starbuck's is classified as SIC 2095 (Roasted coffee), 5441 (candy, nut, and confection store).
