Books

Books often provide a broader treatment of a topic or issue. A book on the issue you are studying can provide some background and a base of knowledge. A research project always needs some sort of background or context before discussing the particular issue you are interested in.

For example, if you are interested in parental anxiety when children are in day care, you should find materials that discuss parental anxiety in general, as well as materials that discuss issues surrounding day care.

Journal Articles/Research Databases

Journal articles

A scholarly journal is a periodical written for an audience of professionals/researchers in a particular field. These journals contain scholarly articles.

A professional/researcher relies on these publications in order to understand what is being studied in their discipline, and when developing and conducting their own research.

As a student, part of your job is to learn about what is being currently studied and learn how original research is conducted.
